How To Cope When Things Don’t Go Well

In every job, you will have days when things just do not go right. Working from home is no exception. There will be days when you just can’t seem to get motivated, days when you are motivated but can’t seem to get anything done, and days when you realize that you have taken on an impossible client with a low idea of what your services are worth or can not provide you with the direction you need to take. Sometimes, you might even find that your financial goals are not being met and you begin to worry about your long-term viability. Here are some coping strategies when the work-from-home dream is turning out to be not so rosy after all.
Support Networks
Many of us have trouble going out and getting some emotional support when things aren’t going well. Most of us have a lot of people interested in our day to day lives who would love to offer us some encouragement, but do not realize that we need it. Identify friends and family members who not only do not mind hearing you vent, but will also offer helpful solutions to the problems you are facing. Sometimes all it takes is a little empathy and you are ready to tackle the work again. Be prepared to return the favour when your friend needs your support in turn!
Look For Inspiration
No matter how bad you have it, you can bet there are people who have had it worse than you and who have managed to pull themselves forward to success. Some people are trained to go out and create material that is meant to be inspiring; motivational speakers like Tony Robbins have mad a career out of marketing tapes and CDs that fire an individual back up. If you find that this works for you, then by all means utilize what is available.
Other people may find that the documented struggles of real life people are a great way for them to become motivated. A lot of people both famous and not-so-famous have experienced diversity and overcome it. Gloria Estefan, Sheryl Crowe, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, and Jimmy Pattison are all well-known individuals who triumphed over incredible odds to realize their dreams. There are stories about individuals overcoming terrible situations every day in media everywhere; if they can beat their demons, then so can you!
Remember The Past
The last job I had before I started to work from home was in a mill. I spent twelve hours every day hauling pieces of wood off a conveyor belt and putting them onto carts. For a change of pace I would go and throw pieces of wood over someone else’s head to make plywood. Whenever I start to feel frustrated or incapacitated by my home business, I have a look through the want ads. I usually find that I am back on the computer within a half hour.
It is important that you remember the reason why you started to work from home in the first place. I find that I get to spend a lot more time with my toddlers than I did when I was working, an opportunity that many fathers do not have until their children are in their teens. While they can present an obstacle to getting work done, I am very grateful for the things I have been able to do with them and the time we spend together. Focusing on the reasons for your decision to work from home will always help get you over bumpy patches, because the odds are they have not changed much if at all.
Set Realistic Goals
Don’t focus on always meeting the dollar figures that you achieved in your best month. My worst times for my home business have followed months where I made money beyond what I had ever thought possible. When the following months fail to measure up, I become depressed and desperate.
Instead of setting goals too high, set them within reason. If you are the sole supporter for your home, then you will have to bring in a certain amount of money. If you enjoy the partnership of someone with a good career, then you can afford to set a minimum that you would like to achieve each month to help contribute. When you exceed this minimum, it will be great. But don’t make that your standard.
Always remember that it takes time to build a small business, so you probably won’t realize a steady income for a few months or even a few years. Look at this time as investment time, when you are helping your business grow through good work and solid references and connections.
Know Your Personality
The hardest person to know is yourself, but if you are the only one you can rely on to bring in money you should take some time to find out what makes you tick. There are hundreds of personality tests available to help determine which type of environment and situation is best suited to you, and you should take advantage of these early so that you can plan accordingly. A solid plan will help to head off those days when you feel down in the dumps.
